Sweaty Much? How To Fight Back Against Sweaty Armpits

Updated: Sep 13

3 Options that can help you to reduce and possibly even eliminate your sweaty issue.

In all of my dealings in working with both men and women, one thing that I always run across is the issue of the sweaty armpit. It’s horrible. It isn’t something that makes people feel very good and quite frankly, it’s embarrassing. Although this problem stretches across the board for both men and women, it seems to be one that haunts men more frequently because of the more layered clothing that a great deal of men have to wear daily for work. This article will help to resolve that issue for you. I will lay out 3 options that can help you to reduce and possibly even eliminate your sweaty issue.

Disclaimer: While none of these options will stop you from sweating, they will help to reduce and possibly eliminate the sweat from running your shirts:

1. Cotton Undershirts And A Strong Antiperspirant Deodorant

This one should go without saying—but I need to make sure I say it. As a basic line of defense and first level attempt at prevention, simply wearing a cotton undershirt and pairing it with a good antiperspirant deodorant will help to reduce both sweat stains and odor. The cotton is breathable and will help to absorb some of the sweat before it transfers to your dress shirt, and the antiperspirant will help to block the sweating while the deodorant will block the body odor. I start with this as a basic because the sweaty armpit issue comes in varying levels. If this problem isn’t a big deal for you, you may be able to stop here. Keep reading if your problem is more severe.

Where to start: shoulder seam fits perfect it should fall exactly where the shoulder ends and where the arm begins- too high is short, too low is big.

2. Garment Guards

Garment guards, also known as, sweat pads or underarm shields/pads are protective liners that are placed under the arm (usually on the seam of your shirt) that prevent armpit stains. This is a very nice option for those that may be suffering from excess sweat and may even have hyperhydrosis. Many brands carry disposable pads, but there are a few that have washable pads which will help to cut down on cost. The pads absorb the sweat so you will no longer have to worry about having that embarrassing sweat mark or the yellow sweat stain anymore-thus eliminating the issue. While this is excellent, there are a few points to consider as you may still want to seek other ways to fix your sweaty issue.

  • The sticky adhesive may lose its grip and get stuck inside of your shirt (in the wrong place) and may even fall out of your shirt if your shirt is untucked.

  • There are guards that come with straps which is excellent because they help the guards to stay in place. This is important as it is the key factor in the success of the guards. The potential downside is the straps may cause irritation, may be visible through your shirt, and can be bothersome for some as it can still shift around a bit and will need to be adjusted.

3. Sweat Proof Shirts

This is the holy grail of sweat. The sweat proof shirt offers technology specifically crafted to eliminate the sweat issue as well as some of the subsequent issues I highlighted in the previous options. While this option is the most expensive, it is certainly the most effective in my opinion. Most brands boast having three layers of protection which include moisture wicking properties that not only completely absorb your sweat, but also provide antibacterial properties as well. The shirts are often crafted in a way that you can wash and reuse and will continue to have the same great quality after each wash. Depending on the brand, the shirt will have the sweat protecting technology located in the armpit area only, or within the whole shirt. This, to me, is what makes this the ultimate choice. I know a lot of guys have a major issue in the armpit area, true, but many have the issue of sweating on their back and torso as well. As a woman that receives many, many hugs from my clients, I can tell you the sweaty back issue is a beast of an issue even though it isn’t mentioned as often. Imagine being completely dry after a long hot sweaty day, imagine being able to finally add more color to your wardrobe because you are no longer stuck with wearing black, white, and only very light or very dark colors, and finally, imagine not having to continually layer ruined shirts with blazers and sweaters (and making yourself sweatier) just to hide soiled armpits. The cost is an investment into something small that can greatly impact your quality of life by increasing your confidence in interaction. I highly recommend this.

Conclusion

The three best ways to reduce and possibly eliminate sweaty armpit stains are to try cotton undershirts and antiperspirant deodorant, garment guards, and the holy grail- sweat proof shirts. These options are tried and true and will help you to prevent the pitfall of sweaty pit stains. Ba dum chh (see what I did there?!)
